DESCRIPTION
PROBLEM
Irrigated systems play a major role in sustaining livelihoods in Africa and the world over. Water in agricultural use is critical for crop yields, and reducing consumption is necessary to increase the amount of water available for other uses.
SOLUTION
The Buried Diffuser saves irrigation water, energy, and use of fertilisers, reduces water waste through evaporation to zero. Water is injected directly to the roots, radically reducing water consumption levels used for irrigation.
The comparison of gravity-operated, highly efficient Buried Diffuser with surface and drip irrigation shows that it allowed to save 34% of the initial irrigation water amount whereas the surface irrigation allowed only 3-4% and the drip irrigation allowed 8%.
IMPACT
The innovation will impact farmers all over the world, especially in water-stressed countries and arid regions as well as regions ravaged by unpredictable rainfall due to climate change. The Buried Diffuser allows to to produce 3 to 5 times more yield than the drip method, boosting farmers income. Since foliage and soil are kept dry, there is less incidences of fungal diseases leading to lesser usage of pesticides and herbicides and lesser labour for weed removal. As there is less leaching of fertilisers, there is less soil and groundwater pollution and reduced need to apply fertilisers. This would result in healthier crops and a cleaner, healthier food chain with the farmers protected from risks of crop failure due to droughts.
