Girls Going Global (GGG) is a non profit organization seeking to address the disparity of girls of color in international education and today’s field of travel and international affairs.
Girls Going Global empowers girls to be global citizens by providing the tools, mentorship, and educational experiences, to make their mark on the world.
Girls examine global issues, participate in service learning projects in Passport To The World program, equipped with the most important impact tool through our Passport Scholarship program, and engage in intercultural exchange and service in Summer Travel Camp.
As Girls Going Global seeks to scale its operations the organization is challenged with the determining best opportunities for scale in the next 3-5 years and capital to both test and implement their business model, these costs include but are not limited to, staff salaries, impact assessment, and program fees.
I am the product of a single teenage mother at age 16. My mother worked 3 jobs to afford me academic and creative opportunities that ultimately lead me to Spelman College and the University of Pennsylvania. I am the manifestation of what happens when girls are exposed. Exposure showcases opportunities and gives girls hope for more. I studied abroad and received my first job in Hyderabad, India. My time there working with social enterprises supporting women and girls, inspired me to share my experiences abroad in an innovative way for girls that looked like me in the U.S. I started GGG to expose youth to global culture within their cities. However, after learning more, I realized that they would benefit most from actual exposure to the world. I wanted these girls to know how big our globe is and to recognize that it extends beyond what they see daily in their neighborhoods. Going Global is a pipeline program to greater opportunities. Girls who participate in our program will not only develop a global perspective but also provide them with guidance and exposure to various college and career paths such as study abroad, Peace Corp service, and Foreign Service. An example would be participant Alexis Mayfield who has been with the organization since 2013. She has participated as a participant in our Passport To The World program and Summer Travel Camps to Costa Rica and Belize. She graduated from World Communications Charter School and went on to attend Hampton University and has stayed involved with Girls Going Global and regularly comes back to mentor throughout the year and serve as a junior counselor during our Summer Travel Camps. Through her ongoing participation with Girls Going Global she was selected as a UNCF Mellon Mays Fellow where she conducted research at Emory University on black womanhood and traveled to South Africa. In the fall of 2016 studied abroad in Rabat Morocco with CIEE. Participant Nnasserri recently traveled to Ghana where she hosted a birthday party for girl orphans. Participant Jazmyne hosted a shoe drive for a battered women’s shelter. These global girls are just a few of the many who have stated that their experience with Girls Going Global has afforded them opportunities they never would have dreamed and have went on to study the world and tackle change in their local and global communities. 99% Global Girls Who Attend College. 100% Global Girls Who Serve in Their Communities, Post GGG. 5 Countries Conquered.
