PROBLEM
Dairy is one of the largest industries on earth. It's enjoyed by every demographic all over the world, and is a $700 billion industry. The protein found in milk is among the most bioavailable on earth and is essential for preventing stunting in children and aiding muscle recovery in active adults. Unfortunately, the dairy industry also has some of the most damaging impacts on the environment. Cows in factory dairy farms are intensively confined, bred for high milk production, and often separated from their calves at birth. Moreover, many people can't enjoy or benefit from the superior nutrition of dairy foods due to lactose intolerance, avoidance of hormones and antibiotics, or they're looking for alternatives for other reasons. Despite all of this, the demand for animal-derived proteins is expected to grow substantially, as global incomes rise and the world's population grows to 9 billion by 2050.
SOLUTION
Advances in biotechnology provide a unique opportunity to address current and coming nutrition needs, without the significant environmental and climate impacts caused by animal agriculture. Our process starts with microflora, encoded with genes that instruct it to produce the protein we want (casein and whey, conventionally only available from bovine milk). The microflora is then fermented with sugar to produce whey or casein protein. As an ingredient, our protein easily fits into the existing infrastructure for dairy processing. We'll partner with food brands across the world to launch products made from our protein (e.g. milk, yogurt, ice cream, etc.) - the world's first dairy foods made without animals.
As compared to other alternative plant-based milks (such as almond, oat, soy, etc.), our process yields the same high-quality protein as cow's milk and also tastes great. When compared with conventional cow's milk products, Perfect Day's protein is lactose, hormone and antibiotic-free. It has less negative environmental impacts, and can be enjoyed by everyone.
CHALLENGES
Creating a brand new category of products made from flora-based protein will require consumer education. Given this new technology may be difficult to understand, the ability to clearly communicate what it is, how it is made, and what its benefits are will be critical. Dairy protein is a known allergen; since Perfect Day's protein is molecularly the same as protein from cow's milk, clear indication of a milk allergen is imperative.
IMPACT
The trend towards animal-free foods continues to grow, with some consumers suffering from lactose intolerance and others concerned about drinking milk from animals which may have been treated with hormones or antibiotics. People are also increasingly aware of the high environmental impact dairy cattle have across the world. Perfect Day will deliver on the same nutritious dairy protein that cows make, while allowing consumers to enjoy their favorite foods without compromising on taste, nutrition, or their values.
