The UN estimates only 10% of the trash in Africa is collected, with the remainder left to rot in communities or burned in unpleasant, open fires. People living in slum conditions without formal waste collection are subject to increased flooding and disease spread that result from unmanaged trash heaps. Concurrently, recycling firms face a supply constraint—they cannot access an adequate supply of quality materials to process
Gedeihen Recyclers is an incentive-based recycling social enterprise engaged in transforming waste to value through recycling and also empowering unemployed women and youths. We Promote Recycling through Reward for Waste Initiative (a Social Enterprise Module). Our recycling service is adapted to the needs of inhabitants in formal and informal settlements, thereby contributing to a better management of urban waste in Lagos State Nigeria. Our initiative gives the municipal alternate means to landfill, help reduces the rate at which waste is been dumped in drains, on streets and serve as a means of livelihood for the unemployed especially women and youth. We help sensitize the residents on the importance of recycling in combating climate change Using an incentive-based approach, Gedeihen Recyclers comes onboard with a model to collect, sort and recycle the waste which evidently has overwhelmed the local authorities and at the same time reward the residents raising their economic and living conditions, since their reward is proportionate to their waste, waste is made wealth
Gedeihen Recyclers offers convenient household recycling service in densely populated low-income neighbourhoods using a fleet of low-cost cargo bikes and an SMS-based incentives platform. Households are encouraged to recycle plastic bottles, plastic sachets, and aluminium cans. For every kilogram of material that families recycle with us, they receive redeemable points over their mobile phones in return. Families can then redeem their points for goods that they value, such as electronics and household goods.
Teaching the orientation of sourcing waste from households
Our customers are recycling firms in Nigeria who face a supply constraint—inadequate supply of quality materials to process. We differentiate ourselves by delivering high quality material. The beneficiaries of our service are low-income households that suffer from the daily indignity of poor waste management in their communities. Gedeihen Recyclers uses sensitization campaigns to raise awareness of our offering within these communities
