Many things in our society is inaccessible for people with sight loss. Many people who are blind or have a low level of vision live independently, but sometimes they need a pair of eyes to go along their daily lives.
Be My Eyes is a free app that offers blind and low-vision individuals access to a network of sighted volunteers and company representatives, for visual assistance through a live video call.
Be My Eyes combines technology with human kindness to offer a platform that makes a difference in the lives of people with sight loss and gives them more independence by having access to visual assistance for any type of task.
At the moment, Be My Eyes has an overwhelming amount of volunteers compared to blind users. The biggest challenge is therefore to gain more blind and low-vision users and to activate existing blind users to use the service more.
The story of Be My Eyes starts with Hans Jørgen Wiberg. Hans Jørgen is visually impaired, and through his work for the Danish Association of the Blind, he learned that many blind or low-vision people used video technology for sighted assistance. He believed that it would be possible to create a network of sighted volunteers willing to assist, so that people with vision loss wouldn’t always have to rely on friends and family. And it turns out that sighted people are more than willing to lend out their eyes. Today more than 1,900,000 volunteers have signed up in the app to assist 100,000+ blind and low-vision users worldwide with anything from navigating unfamiliar surroundings to reading labels. With the addition of Specialized Help, blind and low-vision users can now also get connected to company representatives for accessible and efficient customer support.
