2017 - Food - Category Winner

Evaptainers

"Evaptainers are electricity-free mobile refrigeration units which run at low-cost. Utilizing the phenomenon of evaporative cooling, rather than more energy-intensive vapor compression refrigeration, they are ideal for use in off-grid rural areas with low relative humidity. Evaporative cooling has been employed successfully for centuries in products like the Zeer Pot. Proven to be effective for agricultural use, these products have been known to triple or quadruple the shelf-life of most produce. The company has taken these inventions and upgraded them for modern and commercial use. Using state-of-the art materials and improved design, they have created more effective, more durable, easier to use, mass-producible units. The units reach the same thermal efficiency as the Zeer Pot and have extended storage times of fresh food from days to weeks in pilot program tests. The Evaptainer has a wide range of applicability and potential markets given the current post-harvest food spoilage levels in developing markets."

BackPack Farm Agriculture Program

This Kenya-based social enterprise sells canvas backpacks that contain tools and products like seeds and drip irrigation equipment to small commercial farmers in East Africa who work on 2-5 acres. The goal: boosting farm productivity and sustainability and improving nutrition for communities. The program also provides hands-on training, and recently developed a training application for mobile phones.
2013 - Food - Category Winner

Practical Action

Founded by the late German environmentalist E.F.Schumacher, author of Small is Beautiful, Practical Action is a U.K. based NGO that uses technology to fight poverty in developing countries. The award is for its simple yet highly effective “Zeer pot fridge,” made of two clay pots, one set inside the other with a layer of wet sand between the two, which can extend the useful life of fresh and cooked foods by several days.

Netafim

Netafim is integrating drip technology with a low-tech gravity-based system that enables smallholder farmers in developing countries to costeffectively increase yields and quality, while maximizing water efficiency. Netafim has developed an irrigation system that drips precise quantities of water and nutrients right at the root zone of crops. An elevated tank distributes the water using gravity, which results in a minimized need for electricity and no need for further investments in infrastructure. Thus, the system is helping reduce water usage significantly, improve crop quality, and increase crop yields.
